Stuck in Sudoku? Start with one small move.
A calm checklist for getting unstuck in Sudoku without guessing: rescan, change perspective, use notes, and learn from hints.
A Sudoku grid can look completely unchanged for several minutes, then one small deduction opens the next section. Getting stuck usually means you need a different view, not a random guess.
Check the fullest row, column, or box.
Start somewhere with fewer empty cells. List the missing digits and test each open cell against its other units.
A placement that was invisible during a broad scan can become obvious when you narrow the question.
For example, suppose a row is missing 2, 5, and 8. One empty cell sees a 2 in its column and a 5 in its box. Only 8 remains for that cell. Check the intersecting units before entering it, then scan the row again.
Follow one digit across the Sudoku grid.
Choose a number that already appears several times. Look at where it cannot go in each remaining 3 × 3 box.
Rows and columns from existing copies often leave only one possible position for that digit in another box.
Look for a hidden single within a unit.
If you have been asking, “What belongs in this cell?” try asking, “Where can 6 go in this row?” The same grid can reveal different information depending on the question.
This is often how hidden singles become visible.
Compare candidate notes where they help.
For cells with two or three realistic candidates, write them down. Then compare those candidates across the row, column, and box.
Do not fill every empty cell just because you are stuck. More information is only useful when it makes a pattern easier to see.
Recheck moves that may have been guesses.
If the puzzle feels unusually impossible, make sure an earlier entry was logically justified. A duplicate may be highlighted immediately, but a wrong number can also create trouble later without breaking a local rule.
Undo is often more useful than forcing the next move.
Take a short break from the grid.
After staring at the same section for too long, your eyes begin following the same routes. Step away for a few minutes and return to a different box or digit.
Your progress stays in this browser when local storage is available.
Use a Sudoku hint to learn the pattern.
If you still cannot find the next step, open a hint and read the explanation before applying it. Try to identify the cells involved and understand what rules out the other possibilities.
The useful part of a hint is the pattern you can recognize next time.
Does a stuck Sudoku puzzle mean you need to guess?
Not necessarily. Recheck earlier entries, look for candidate eliminations, and change which unit or digit you are following. Our published puzzle packs are checked for one solution and a complete logical solve. If the next step is unfamiliar, an explanation can help more than an untested number.
Make one logical move.
You do not need to see the whole solution. Find one placement you can explain, then let the puzzle change around it.
